Inglewood has a nice list of public figures who come out of the city, make names for themselves, and put the town on the map in the process. Hip Hop Producer, Goku, joins the likes of Mack 10, Casey Veggies, Cali Swag District, Bishop Lamont, Shawn Christopher, Tyra Banks, and Paul Pierce (just to name a few), who have been able to make it in the entertainment industry.
Now, Goku, who’s mother named him Justin Levy, at only 22 years old, finds himself on planes 5 times a year travelling to different cities across the country performing before sold out crowds and gearing up for his first trip out of the country to Japan, where he will be performing songs from his upcoming mixed tape, “Jimmy J Kansas.”
When asked how he’s feeling about his new experiences in life, Goku said, “I can’t really explain how overjoyed I am at this point in my life, because, all the things that I’ve ever wanted to accomplish are happening right now. The sky is the limit from here, and I just want to take advantage of the opportunities I’ve been blessed with.”
His vintage boom bap feel brings a strong feeling of nostalgia over me as I listen to him scroll through track after track on his iTunes library. He says, “I listened to a lot of Pete Rock growing up, Dre was a huge influence for everybody for sure, but for me because he was and still is, a perfectionist. And that’s how I am when crafting my sound, it has to be done a particular way, or else, I can’t really get down with it. It’s all feeling at the end of the day, so sometimes I’ll hear something, and go and try to recreate it, but then, it becomes something else. I’m cool with that too, because to me, the process is organic.”
