It was a tense day at UCLA on Wednesday, as thousands of students were sent scrambling for safety. A shooting occurred in a small office of the engineering building around 10:00am, which resulted in an apparent murder-suicide.
For two and a half hours, students, teachers and campus employees barricaded themselves in classrooms and offices, while police scoured the university, searching for additional suspects. By 12:10pm, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck confirmed that two men were dead. The lockdown was lifted at 12:26pm. However, police continued to search every classroom with guns drawn to ensure there were no additional shooters.
It is unclear at this point what triggered the violence. Authorities are trying to determine if it was a domestic situation. They will be checking social media sites for information that might shed light on the motives of the shooter. A note was reportedly found on the scene, but it was not revealed whether it was connected to the incident.
